There hasn't been a good watch of a movie these past few months. The last few movies which I thought were good, were Avengers Age of Ultron and Antman. Maybe Mission Impossible was a good watch too, but having watched the previous 4, you kinda know what to expect in the 5th one.
When The Martian's trailer was released, I wasn't as excited before I saw Ridley Scott's name being flashed boldly at the end of it. Ridley has often and always made great movies, namely Prometheus, Robin Hood, Black Hawk Down, Gladiator and of course Alien.
I think The Martian is a good mix of Apollo 13, Castaway and Gravity. It's probably what Gravity aspired to be. With its 2 hours 20 minutes showtime, I was kept at the edge of my seat the entire suspenceful scenes. It is also filled with great dialogues along with witty jokes.
You get to see how versatile Matt Damon is as an actor. If you remember how Tom Hanks was in castaway, you will feel much more sympathetic towards Matt. He brought out a fine performance as a survivor in a "space wilderness" setting. I'm like - how the heck do you even survive in a inhospitable planet while waiting/looking for rescue? No episodes of Dual Survival, Man Woman Wild or Man Vs Wild can ever prepare anyone to face what Matt faced.
As for the whole space theme settings, Mars has been simulated rather beautifully. You could just see how Mars is made up of harsh, vast open sandy areas and yet posesses a beautiful alien landscape. Great work by the cinematography department on that. The line of good casts from Jessica Chastain, Sean Bean, Micheal Pena, Kate Mara, Chiwetel Ejiofor to Jeff Daniels make everything even more convincing.
i personally think this is a Picture of the Year contender. This is a must watch. Happy watching!
